Hey HHN fam! Happy Saturday! I have a fun blogpost for you all today. It's a bittersweet moment for me because summer is ending!! I'm trying to be outside as much as I can before the sunshine stops. Also, I'm enjoying and preserving as much summer fruits as I can. Which brings us to today's blogpost! I'm going to share a few ways to enjoy your favorite summer fruits before they go out of season. Let's go!
Ways to enjoy your summer fruits:
Season them!
Watermelon
You don't have to if that's not your thing, but if you want to jazz up the flavor of your watermelon, sprinkle some salt and a little chili powder and bam! an extra delicious slice of watermelon. Perfect for these last few hot days.
Mango
Wash, peel and dice up your mango. Sprinkle some nutmeg, cilantro and harissa spice, stir and enjoy with chips or crackers. Perfect for your family Labor Day bbq or picnic with friends.
Stew your peaches or make a peach crumble!
There's a blogpost up with a recipe for apple crumble. Click here to check it out and substitute the apples for peaches.
Stewed Peaches
To stew your peaches, all you need to do is wash and dice them; add them to a pan on medium heat with a little butter or coconut oil. Add your favorite spices like cinnamon, nutmeg/ cardamom and stir until covered evenly and tender. Then use it as a topping for yogurt with granola, or ice cream with some nuts, or even for pancakes. YUM
Disclaimer: Peaches were recently recalled for salmonella so don't purchase them from Target, Wegmans, Walmart, Sam's Club or Kroger.
Make Jelly!
I love cherries and I don't get to eat them often so this season I tried them in different ways. Here's one of my favorites, cherry berry chia jelly:
In a pot on medium heat add 1 cup chia seeds, 1 1/2 cup frozen cherries (with some other berries mixed in-optional). Add 1 cup water and stir until berries get soft. Use a spoon to mash the berries and dissolve them. Add 1 tbsp nutmeg, 1 tsp ginger and 1 tsp cinnamon. Stir to incorporate the flavors. Finally, add 4tbsp of maple syrup (optional) and continue stirring over low heat. Once the mixture is uniform ( if there are a few chunks that's ok) turn off the heat. Let it cool, pour it into a jar and stick it in the fridge. Enjoy it on top of pancakes, in a Pb&J sandwich or with yogurt and granola for breakfast. So decadent and flavorful. Plus its super easy to make. Can't beat that!
A lil ASMR for ya!
Save your fruits for later...
Freezing: This method is a no brainer. Wash your fruits and cut them into chunks. Put them in freezer bags and keep them in the freezer to enjoy in the fall or winter in your favorite dishes (pies, smoothies, stews, salads, jellies, chutneys etc.).
I hope you guys enjoyed this blogpost! I must say its one of my favorites. If you try out any of these suggestions don't forget to snap a pic and share it with me on instagram @theholistichealthnut.
